Sunset Fire erupts in Hollywood Hills, flames send residents fleeing: See photos.

Fire officials say the flames consumed about 43 acres of land before their aggressive attack stopped forward progress. Most of the evacuation orders have been lifted.

The Sunset Fire hit the famous Hollywood Hills neighborhood, charring up land and sparking evacuation orders as multiple blazes in the Los Angeles area have burned down thousands of homes, killed at least five people and sent residents fleeing.

The Sunset Fire ignited on Wednesday night in the heavily populated Hollywood Hills just a few miles away from the iconic Hollywood sign. The blaze prompted the Los Angeles Fire Department to issue evacuation orders shortly after 6 p.m. local time, and vehicles poured out of the hills frantic to reach safety.

“This fire was rapidly and aggressively attacked by using coordinated air and ground fire suppression efforts,” Los Angeles Fire Department fire Chief Kristin Crowley said at a news conference Thursday morning. “Residents heeded our timely evacuation orders.”

According to Cal Fire, the blaze consumed about 43 acres. Although it was 0% contained, firefighters said they were able to stop forward progress on the fire.
